LionBlues:
The State College Blues Society
... can't hear nuthin but the blues ...
IT'S COME TO OUR ATTENTION THAT THIS SITE MAY NOT BE RESOLVING CORRECTLY IN INTERNET.EXPLORER; SORRY FOR THE PROBLEMS. WE TESTED THE SITE IN MOZILLA/FIREFOX, OPERA, AND KONQUEROR/SAFARI (BUT I DON'T HAVE A WINDOZE PC!).
The State College Blues Society exists to encourage and connect the growing blues presence in Happy Valley, PA and surrounding areas.
We are also in the process of registering with the Blues Foundation, which should connect us with other regional/national events.
The LionBlues Blog:
The LionBlues Blog is a great place to meet other blues fans, find concerts, jams, recordings. Our blues.calendar is a great place to post events for the blues community (you can even subscribe to it with iCal, GoogleCalendar, 30boxes, etc.). In the future, we hope to connect fans with musicians and musicians with gigs. Not quite complete ... but, it's a start!Featured Artist: Teddy Lee Hooker
Formerly known as Ted Grimes, TeddyLee has put out a great new cd, Elecktrik Rain. Listing his influences as everyone from B.B. to Hendirix to Miles to Prince (focusing on singly named artists), he has a unique blend of electric blues styles. Also lots of fun!
Check out the link for a 2 minute slice of 'You looked good last night', featured on xmradio's bluesville. One of the funniest blues numbers we've heard in some time!
Blues 101: Robert Johnson
Robert
Johnson
If you want a beginning and don't know where to start.
The prototypic bluesman. Burst from the delta (Missippi, son),
sold his soul to the devil and played like he had 7 fingers on one hand
(that's one more than Hound Dog Taylor). Folks are still
looking for the missing 30th song, made famous by Ry Cooder and Steve
Vai in Crossroads.
In any case, the Complete
and remastered 2-CD set
is pure blues.
David Bromberg
April. 19th at the StateTheatre!
Whiile David may play more 'roots' than blues, his old album
(yes, vinyl) -- Wanted:
Dead or Alive -- is still
one of my favorites!
Who says you can't get your blues in NYC!? Check out his guitar/violin shop in downtown Wilmington, DE (if you're on the road)...
Shemekia
Copeland
at the State Theatre on May 13th at
7:30pm.
The daughter of blues guitarist Johnny Copeland (Lord, do you
think
she's tired of hearing that phrase?) is a real treat from the 'old
school' of blues women! If you need an introduction to her
work,
try to find a copy of Lightning
in a Bottle and
fast-forward to her 'duet' with Robert Cray!
Not
the Blues; Just Jazz
In the spirit of supporting all live music in State
College ...
check out the Jazz Jams 7-9pm the last Sunday of the Month at Sozo, 256
E Beaver Ave, State College. Details once we get our calendar
software up and running...
